Overview
This guide will help you troubleshoot many common problems with
the Slipstream client, including inability to connect and connection
but no activity. This is a generic guide, and may not tend to cover
issues that give specific error messages. This article assumes
that you have successfully installed the Slipstream software.
Symptoms
The Slipstream client will not connect, or Slipstream connects
but does not seem to be active.
Causes
Web acceleration works by compressing the web pages you view into
smaller files so they load in less time.
Without Slipstream, your computer connects directly to a website.
With Slipstream, your computer connects to a server called a proxy.
The proxy then connects to the web page, downloads and compresses
the website, and sends it to your computer.
Slipstream issues can be caused by many different things, including:
* Slipstream is disabled.
* The Slipstream client is not configured properly.
* You have a firewall, internet security software, or anti-spyware/anti-adware
installed.
* You have another proxy service or proxy settings that are superseding Slipstream.
* You do not have the latest version of the Slipstream client.
* You have not entered your dialup username or have entered it incorrectly.
* You are not dialed into out network.
* You have increased the image quality to maximum, thereby lowering the compression
to minimum.
* You are using a browser besides Internet Explorer (such as Netscape or Mozilla),
and these must be configured manually.
* There is an unknown reason that Internet Explorer is not accepting the requested
changes from the Slipstream client.
Resolution
Make sure the Slipstream client is enabled
1. Look in your system tray for the Slipstream icon.
Your system tray is in the gray bar with the Start button. The
system tray is on the far right, above the clock. The generic Slipstream/FastNet
icon is a blue-green globe, however you may have customized this
for your ISP.
2. If Slipstream is enabled, it will be bright blue-green. If
it is disabled, it will be faded and have a red X through it. 3.
If it is disabled, click on the icon.
4. A menu will appear. Choose Start FastNet. (Or, if you have a customized
version, this will be the name you gave the Slipstream client.)
Verify Slipstream Configuration
1. Find the Slipstream icon in your system tray.
2. Click on the icon and a menu will appear.
3. Choose Settings...
4. Click the Connection tab.
5. Click Advanced.
6. Make sure Remote Server Hostname is set to slipstream.safepages.com.
7. Make sure Server Port is set to 7000.
8. Make sure the Local Listening Port is set to 5400.
9. Click OK to save changes.
Firewalls, Security, and Anti-Spyware Software
Firewalls and Security/Privacy software is designed to protect
your computer by blocking the many unused ports into your computer.
Slipstream requires that certain ports be open. You will need to
open these ports.
Slipstream requires ports 7000 and 5400 be open. Many firewalls
allow you to choose the program from a list, which will open anything
the program asks. Others allow you to specify the required ports.
Please consult the documentation for your specific firewall software
for instructions on how to make an exception for these ports or
for the Slipstream client.
Other Proxy Servers
Since Slipstream uses proxy technology, you may experience problems
if you are using another service or software which also uses a
proxy server.
It is very easy to check to see if Internet Explorer is trying
to use another proxy server.
1. Disable the Slipstream Client. If you do not, you may be seeing
Slipstream's proxy settings.
1. Find the Slipstream Icon in the system tray (by the clock).
2. Click the Slipstream Icon. A menu will appear.
3. Choose Stop FastNet. (If you have a customized version, this will be the
name you gave it.)
2. Open Internet Explorer.
3. Go to Tools, then Internet Options....
4. Click the Connections tab.
5. Double-click the correct connection icon in the Dial-up and Virtual Private
Network settings area.
6. Look to see if Use a proxy server for this connection is checked.
If this box is checked, your system is using a different proxy
server. Since you cannot run two proxy services at once, you will
have to choose which service you wish to use. If you're not sure
what other service is using the proxy technology, you can get an
idea by looking at the information in the Address field.
If you wish to disable the other proxy service, uncheck the box
next to Use a proxy server for this connection and click OK to
save.
Old Versions of the Slipstream Client
Older versions of the Slipstream client may not work or may have
a bug which is causing a problem. Please upgrade to the latest.
To check to see which version you have:
1. Click the Slipstream icon in the system tray (by the clock).
A menu will appear.
2. Chose Settings....
3. Click the Update tab.
4. This screen will tell you the latest version available, and the current
version you have installed.
5. If you wish to upgrade at this time, click Update Now. The software will
automatically download and install. After the process is over, you may need
to reboot your computer.
Wrong Username
If you are dialed into our system, Slipstream will attempt to
authenticate based on your login; however this method is not as
reliable as making sure you have the correct username in the Slipstream
settings.
If the correct username is there, it will have two methods for
authenticating you, and will decrease the number of problems you
may be having.
1. Click the Slipstream icon in the system tray (by the clock).
A menu will appear.
2. Choose Settings....
3. Click the Connection tab.
4. Verify your username and password.
Note: Your username should be your full dialup username, including
@realm.com. Example: johndoe@world.net. Your password will be case-sensitive,
so be sure your CAPS LOCK is not on.
5. Click OK to save.
Not Dialed Into Our Network
Unless you have set up a special Web Accel Only account, you must
be dialed into one of our access numbers in order to use Slipstream.
We will not allow Slipstream to be used with other internet providers.
Image Quality Settings
If the Slipstream image quality is set to "Minimum" Acceleration
and Maximum/Original image quality, you will have nearly normal
browsing speeds. This is because a good portion of Slipstream's
technology relies on compressing images. If those images are not
being compressed, the speed will be lower.
To change these settings:
1. Click the Slipstream icon in the system tray (by the clock).
A menu will appear.
2. Choose Settings....
3. You will see a slider bar. Slide it all the way to the left to maximize
browsing speed and lower image quality.
Other (Non-Internet Explorer) Browsers
Slipstream is designed to work automatically with Internet Explorer.
If you are using a different browser, such as Netscape, Mozilla,
or Opera, Slipstream will still work, but will require manual settings.
Your browser should be set to use a proxy server.
Proxy Server Setting: 127.0.0.1
Port: 5400
For detailed instructions, please consult your browser documentation.
IE Is Not Accepting Automatic Changes
If you have any other software that uses what's called "Proxy
technology", it might be disallowing the Slipstream client
from making the required changes in Internet Explorer. To check
this:
1. Important: Make sure the Slipstream client is closed or disabled.
2. Go to Internet Explorer.
3. Click Tools, then Internet Options....
4. Select the Connections tab.
5. Double-click the proper connection icon in the white area labled Dialup
and Virtual Private Network settings.
6. Look to see if Use a Proxy server for this connection is unchecked.
7. If it is checked, then something else is using proxy, and you can't use
both at once.
It's possible that something else is causing IE to not accept
the settings from Slipstream, even if the Proxy Server box is unchecked.
Sometimes this can be caused by anti-spyware programs (such as
SpyBot or AdAware) or privacy software that has disabled other
programs from being able to change IE. Sometimes there is something
wrong with IE that is not related to anything else.
If this is the case, you can manually set IE with the correct
proxy settings. Follow the above instructions, then:
8. Check the box, Use a Proxy server for this connection.
9. Under the Address: field, enter 127.0.0.1.
10. Under Port: enter 5400.
11. Click OK to save.
